For more than two decades, Craig DuVarney has brought a unique combination of determination and success to his career as a Certified Financial Planner. While in junior high school, Craig realized that he wanted to become a financial planner and that he would need a way to pay for his education. Cornerstone’s Founder and CEO, Gordon Wollman, has been helping people plan, pursue and achieve the goals they have for themselves and their families for over 25 years. Gordon grew up helping his dad on the family farm near Huron, South Dakota. After high school, he went to basic training, both to serve our country and to help pay for college. While attending South Dakota State University to earn his degree in mechanized agriculture with a minor in agronomy, Gordon went through officer candidate school and stayed connected to the farming community by running a custom hay bailing business on the weekends.
Unfortunately, Gordon’s father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 1989. As a newly married, recent college graduate, Gordon moved back to the farm and tried to make a go of it, living with the same grit and discipline his father had. Gordon found that he welcomed the challenge of handling the estate and helping his mother get back on her feet, and that experience made him realize how important it is to have a financial plan. After about three years of farming, he decided to change his career path.
At the urging of a family friend Gordon obtained his Series 6 & 63 and insurance license and began working with an insurance company. But he soon realized that insurance was just a piece of the puzzle regarding comprehensive financial security, and that he could better help clients if he had a broader range of investment tools and education. So, he jumped in to learn everything he could, obtaining his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificate and eventually earning his Master’s Degree in Financial Planning.

The FT 400 was developed in collaboration with Ignites Research, a subsidiary of the FT that provides specialized content on asset management. To qualify for the list, advisers had to have 10 years of experience and at least $300 million in assets under management (AUM) and no more than 60% of the AUM with institutional clients. The FT reaches out to some of the largest brokerages in the U.S. and asks them to provide a list of advisors who meet the minimum criteria outlined above. These advisors are then invited to apply for the ranking. Only advisors who submit an online application can be considered for the ranking. In 2019, roughly 960 applications were received and 400 were selected to the final list (41.7%). The 400 qualified advisers were then scored on six attributes: AUM, AUM growth rate, compliance record, years of experience, industry certifications, and online accessibility. AUM is the top factor, accounting for roughly 60-70 percent of the applicant’s score. Additionally, to provide a diversity of advisors, the FT placed a cap on the number of advisors from any one state that’s roughly correlated to the distribution of millionaires across the U.S.

Ms. Hartquist has a B.A. from Louisiana State University in New Orleans, where she received the Phi Beta Kappa award. She was an educator in the Orleans Parish Public Schools for many years, then founded Success Leadership Systems, Inc., successfully coaching corporations and individuals in attaining their goals.
